DESIGN PROCESS

1. User Research

Identifying insights from interviews with a London Underground Train Driver and the Chair of staff disability at TFL.

3. Ideation

Sketching a variety of possible solutions and combing/removing ideas until coming to an acceptable proposition.

Finding out the ratio between force and battery charge and deciding a comfortable force range using a test rig.

7. Mechanism

Making a durable system incorporating a ratchet, compound gear train, and torsion spring to create a smooth transfer of force from user to dynamo.

2. Product Disassembly

Taking apart current battery powered, injection moulded products to learn about electronics, mechanism, and casing design.

Creating low-fidelity protoypes to guage size and ergomnics

Calculating resistor and capacitance values, and selecting a battery and microcontroller.

Designing in Fusion360 a casing to house all the components and ensure it could be injection moulded for mass manufacture

Designing the shape and creating the sleeve graphics as well as mocking up the user guide on illustrator.

Finished Product

A portable wellbeing device that incentivizes regular dynamic stretching by proportionally charging a battery that powers an ambient ‘daylight’ LED in a rewarding manner which in turn changes brightness/hue to ensure realignment of circadian rhythms.
